History

The name The Brook has a long history attached to it. Brook refers to both place name and family name.

The most common Germanic word for swamp is broek, which is identical to the swamp word "Bruch", the English "brook" and the Dutch "beek". In earlier times, a brook most likely ran through the area where the campsite is now housed.

Although the brook no longer exists, the diversion canal has restored a significant water influence at this location.

As a place name, broek, under one guise or another, occurs just about everywhere in the Dutch language area, and so do the corresponding surname forms.

Not surprisingly, the current site of the campsite is still popularly called "Erve Brooks" after the first family to settle here.
